The name of the city actually comes from Hrishikesh, another name for Lord Vishnu. According to legend, Lord Vishnu rewarded Rabhya Rishi by appearing in the form of Hrishikesh, after the Rishi had engaged in severe penance. In fact the religious importance of the city can be gathered from the fact that the city figures quite a few times in the myths of Hinduism. The city was the place where Lord Shiva drank the poisonous venom which emerged after the gods and demons churned the Cosmic Ocean in a bid to be the first to lay their hands on the Nectar of Immortality. Lakshman, Lord Rama's brother is in fact said to have built the first Lakshman Jhula (literally Lakshman's Bridge) which spans the sacred here Ganga.
