Gangotri is one of the four sites of Char Dham Yatra. It is a holy town that lies on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, a tributary of Ganges River. The Gangotri town is located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Gangotri is also considered the seat of Goddess Ganga. It is the second destination of Char Dham Yatra. A Gorkha Commander, Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century AD, constructed the Gangotri temple. The temple is built at an altitude of 3200 m above sea level.
