Amarkantak is the starting point for Narmada and Sone Rivers; Narmada runs towards west whereas Sone flows eastwards. It is said that Lord Shiva gave matchless purifying powers to Narmada River. Now people believe that just a look at the sacred river is enough to absolve their sins. It shows this river's superiority over the Ganga River, in which you need to take a dip to purify yourself. It is said that the Ganga takes a dip in the waters of the Narmada to become cleaner and purer once in a year.
