2010 Commonwealth Games Delhi

A unique sport as it has emerged now, Commonwealth Games excite people of all ages. It has bagged the position of the third biggest sports event after the Olympics and the Asiad as far as India is concerned. Last held as Commonwealth Game Melbourne 2006 in the month of March, Delhi has been decided to be the next site for the 2010 Commonwealth Game. In the Commonwealth Game Melbourne 2006, about 4500 athletes from 71 nations participated in 16 varied sports. Let's see the figures in the approaching 2010 Commonwealth Game Delhi.

India has got the honor to host the first ever Commonwealth Games in this country. New Delhi defeated Hamilton (Canadian city) by 46 votes to 22 at the CGF General Assembly held in Montego Bay in November 2003. Preparations are in full swing to make the event an overwhelming one. Several stadiums, swimming pools and other sports amenities are being constructed by the Delhi Development Authority and the Indian Olympic Association across the city for the event at a cost of 1.15 billion USD.

Now India has got a chance to display the grand event of 2010 Commonwealth Game Delhi, which will be in practice from October 3rd to 14th. The opening and closing ceremony for the 2010 Commonwealth Game Delhi will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. In the recent Melbourne Commonwealth Game in Australia, India not only bagged 50 medals (22 Gold, 17 Silver and 11 Bronze medals) but also stood 4th in rank. Sports categories in which this country showed its talent were Badminton, Hockey, Table Tennis, Athletics, Shooting, Weight Lifting and Athletics.

Along with 2010 Commonwealth Game Delhi, India will also host the Commonwealth Youth Games in order to give a rise to the active involvement to the enthusiastic young generation in the sports and physical fitness activities. This step will boost our relationship with the international world.

For the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010, major investments are being made so as to enhance the growth and expansion of the metropolitan city. The Indian government has identified around 50 projects with an estimated figure of up to US $298 million. The government has come to a decision of constructing more new grade separators / flyovers / bridges besides improvement and strengthening of some major roads linked to various stadium / venues identified for Commonwealth Games.
