Ladakh is a region of contrast because though it is surrounded by lofty peaks it lies in a rain shadow zone and arable land is scarce.

The Zanskar River presents some of the most visually spectacular runs for whitewater rafting in India. The river itself is mostly class 3 rapids with some sections of class 4 water. The river is actually formed by the confluence of the Stod and the Tsarap rivers and rises near the border between Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
